FAQs

1. Where does Zoysiagrass grow?
We have created a Zoysia Zone Map for your convenience. Zoysiagrass will grow almost anywhere in the United States, except the farther north you go the shorter its "green season" will be. Generally, Zoysiagrass will be green from April through October (when most people are outdoors) anywhere south of Chicago or Hartford, Connecticut. The further south you go, the longer the green season. In Florida, Zoysiagrass will be green from March through November. Interestingly, Meyer Z-52 Zoysiagrass survives temperatures between 40 degrees below zero to 125 degrees above zero, i.e. desert conditions.

2. How do I plant my Zoysiagrass Plugs or Sod?
See our online planting instructions for all you’ll need to know.

3. When does Zoysiagrass go dormant?
Zoysiagrass turns a golden color in mid-winter during dormancy. Dormancy begins gradually following heavy frosts during late Fall and continues until ground temperatures warm in Spring.

4. Do soil types matter?
Not really. Zoysiagrass likes most soils whether sandy, silty or clay and Zoysiagrass actually likes low pH soils and poor quality soils. Extreme high or low pH can be corrected with lime (for low pH) or sulphur (for high pH) products.

5. Is Zoysiagrass available in seed form?
High quality Zoysiagrass is "vegetatively propagated," meaning it grows from sprigs. The seeds of high quality Zoysiagrass do not create a pure stand of the host plant. Consequently, plugging or solid sodding are the best methods to create your Zoysiagrass lawn. All of the Zoysiagrass seed we have seen and tested resulted in lower quality turf stands. Winrock Zoysia stands for high quality turf establishment.
